Healthy Facts for a Healthy You

Men's Health Month

June is Men’s Health Month, a time to focus on the health issues that affect men and boys and encourage them to take care of their bodies by eating right, exercising, and working to prevent disease. Not only is this an important month for men, but we also encourage women to talk with men in their lives about physical and mental health. Many men avoid doctor visits unless they feel very sick, but skipping routine care can lead to bigger problems down the road.

Heart Health

Men are more at risk of developing heart disease than women, with 1 in 4 male deaths in the U.S. being attributed to heart disease. Factors such as higher smoking rates and higher average blood pressure levels contribute to heart disease in men and can even cause heart problems, such as heart attacks, to develop earlier in life. Other medical conditions that can contribute to heart disease include diabetes, obesity or being overweight, an unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, and excessive alcohol use. To learn more about how to care for your heart, check out our Heart Health Awareness Month blog and speak to your provider about making meaningful changes that are right for you.

Mental Health

Mental health is something that is not often talked about or prioritized amongst men. Factors such as societal expectations, stigma surrounding masculinity and traditional gender roles, and a lack of emotional support can contribute to men not prioritizing their mental health. Reducing stress, dealing with trauma, and working through life events are all important, and no one has to do it alone, including men. Breaking the stigma, promoting open conversations, and encouraging men to seek help are the beginning steps to a better health journey.

Cancer

According to the American Cancer Society, lung cancer, prostate cancer, colorectal cancer, and skin cancers are more prevalent in men than in women, with 1 in 2 men being diagnosed with some form of cancer during their lifetime. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer found in men in the U.S., with 1 in 8 men being diagnosed with this form of cancer in their lifetime. Prostate cancer primarily affects men over the age of 65, but other factors such as race and family history can increase the likelihood of getting diagnosed at a younger age.

Annual Check-Up

Men are more likely than women to delay doctor visits, often ignoring early signs of health issues. Only 3 in 5 men get an annual physical, and nearly 40% of men only seek out medical care when they believe they are sick. But routine checkups can detect problems early, when they’re easier to treat, help prevent serious conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and cancer, and improve energy, focus, and overall quality of life.
