Safe & Fun Summer Activities for All Ages
Budget-Friendly Fun Ways to Stay Active Outdoors

Long summer days are finally here, bringing more chances to get outside, enjoy the fresh air, and spend time with family and friends. Staying active in the summer doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated! There are many simple ways to enjoy the season, no matter your age or budget. We know that time, money, or health challenges can make some activities hard to do. There are plenty of safe and affordable ways to move your body, relax your mind, and enjoy time outdoors. Check out some fun summer activity ideas and local resources in the Pottstown area below!
Swimming
Going for a swim is a great way to cool off and get gentle exercise, especially for older adults or people with joint pain. Check out some local resources below for summer swimming fun!
- Pottstown YMCA: open swim, lessons, and summer camps
- Pottsgrove Recreation: community swim lessons for Pottsgrove township residents
- Pottstown Parks & Rec: water-based events and splash pad day
Always remember that not all water is safe. If you’re visiting a natural body of water like a lake, creek, or river, be aware of posted signs and safety alerts. Never swim alone, especially in unfamiliar water, and be cautious about deep areas, fast currents, or wildlife. If you’re with children, close supervision is key. Drowning can happen quickly and quietly, even in shallow water.
Biking
Riding a bike is a fun way to get around, get exercise, and explore your neighborhood. It’s also more affordable than driving and a good option for those who don’t have a car. If you have a bike that’s in working shape, try going for a ride to a nearby park or around your block with a friend or child. Check out Bike Schuylkill, a free community bike share program: bikeschuylkill.org
If you do ride, always follow safety rules. Wear a helmet if you have one, ride on sidewalks or safe side streets, and be alert to cars and pedestrians.
Hiking
You don’t need expensive gear or a long drive to enjoy the benefits of nature. There are many local walking paths, community parks, or wooded trails that are free and open to the public. Even walking around your neighborhood, a school track, or a tree-lined street can be a peaceful break from screens and stress.
Before heading out, check the weather and try to walk in the early morning or evening if it's hot. Wear comfy shoes, bring a water bottle, and apply sunscreen or bug spray if needed. If you're walking with kids, turn it into a game by looking for birds, bugs, or different kinds of leaves. If you're older or managing a health condition, go at your own pace and take breaks when needed. Nature walks aren’t about speed, they’re about feeling good and clearing your mind.
Gardening
Gardening is good for your body and mind. It helps reduce stress, boosts mood, and keeps you moving. You don’t need a backyard to grow something; many people start with small pots on a porch, a windowsill, or a sunny spot indoors. Planting herbs, tomatoes, or flowers in reused containers (like buckets, milk jugs, or old coffee cans) is a low-cost way to start. Getting your hands in the dirt or even pulling weeds can feel grounding and calming. Check out these local community gardens and resources in Pottstown:

- Having a picnic at a local park or green space
- Hosting a family water balloon fight or sprinkler day
- Watching the stars at night with a blanket and snacks
