You Don’t Need Sunglasses If It’s Cloudy Outside
False. Harmful UV rays can penetrate through the clouds. Your sunglasses need to have UVA and UVB protection and should be worn whether it’s sunny or cloudy.
Pool Water is Safe for Your Eyes
False. Exposing your eyes to pool water can cause redness and irritation due to the chlorine and other chemicals. It also puts your eyes at risk for serious infection due to germs and bacteria. Definitely wear goggles!
Just Like Adults, Children Can Wear Contact Lenses
True. Children can be fitted for contacts as soon as they’re mature enough to take care of them. We often say, if you can keep your room clean, you're ready for contacts.
If You Lose Your Eyesight, It’s Gone Forever
False. There are a number of reasons for vision loss, and not all vision loss is permanent. It could be as simple as needing a new glasses prescription, or you may need some sort of treatment. The important thing is, as soon as you notice changes to your vision, see your eye doctor immediately. The sooner the vision loss is addressed, the more likely it can be fixed.
Sitting Too Close to the TV Can Damage Your Vision
False. Sitting too close to the TV does not permanently damage your vision, but it can cause your eye muscles to work too hard, leading to eye strain and even headaches.
Eating Carrots Can Improve Your Vision
False. While carrots are a good source of vitamin A, it is actually the green leafy vegetables like spinach that are best for our eyes. Also, they don’t exactly improve our vision, but they can help protect and preserve our vision as we get older.
Light Colored Eyes Are More Sensitive to The Sun
True. Pigment absorbs UV light and protects against damaging rays. Light-colored eyes have less protective pigment resulting in higher light sensitivity.
You Only Need an Eye Exam If Something Feels Off
False. A lot of ocular diseases are painless, and some prescriptions are hiding, especially in children. We don’t want to wait until symptoms are unmanageable or until the vision loss is irreversible to seek treatment. It may be too late.
