To our CHDC patients and community members at large,

CHDC is committed to ensuring our patients stay healthy and support vaccines to protect against serious diseases.

Montgomery County Health Department confirmed a case of measles in an unvaccinated Montgomery County child who had traveled internationally. Potentially exposed individuals have already been notified by the Health Department.

Important Information You Need to Know:

  • Measles is a highly contagious disease with serious possible complications, including hospitalization, long-term illness, and death. Someone who is infected can spread the disease to other people before noticing any symptoms.

What can you do to protect unexposed children and adults from measles?

  • Take action BEFORE exposure!

Regardless of age, if you never received the vaccine or titers (titers is a blood test to determine if your immune system has developed sufficient protection against a particular disease) and are exposed to measles, you are mandated to a 21-day quarantine*.

      • *Quarantine may result in personal and financial hardships due to not being able to work, go to school, shop, etc.
  • If you or your child is behind on the measles vaccine, please call 610-326-9460 to schedule a visit at one of our health center locations throughout Pottstown, Barto, and Boyertown.
    • CHDC patients can obtain documentation of vaccination or titers status.

  • If you have upcoming travel to an outbreak area or immunocompromised, please speak with your CHDC provider to discuss the best course of action.

Measles Symptoms

Measles is a very contagious disease caused by a virus. It can be dangerous, especially for babies and young children. Protect your family and your community.

Measles spreads through the air when a sick person coughs or sneezes. The virus can stay in the air for 2 hours after a person with measles leaves the space. It is so contagious that about 9 out of 10 people who come near a person with measles and are not protected by vaccination will also become infected.

Measles symptoms appear 7 to 14 days after contact with the virus. Common measles symptoms include:

  • High fever (may spike to more than 104 degrees)
  • Cough
  • Runny nose
  • Red and/or watery eyes
  • Rash (breaks out 3-5 days after symptoms begin)

Measles can cause severe health problems, including:

  • Pneumonia
  • Swelling of the brain (encephalitis)
  • Possibly even death

Measles vaccination is highly protective against infection, and we recommend that all children receive 2 doses of the MMR vaccine - a first dose at 1 years old and a second dose at 4 years old.

  • CDC data show the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine is highly effective. Individuals with a history of prior infection or vaccination who have received the full series of MMR vaccines are 97% protected within two to three weeks of vaccination and are unlikely to contract measles.
