Does HPV Cause Cervical Cancer?

More than 13,000 women in the United States are diagnosed with cervical cancer each year, however, it is one of the most preventable types of cancer. About 99% of cervical cancers are caused by Human Papillomavirus (HPV). The key to prevention involves regular screenings, HPV vaccination, and early treatment. At CHDC, our OB/GYN team is dedicated to helping women stay proactive about their cervical health. During Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, be sure to stay on top of regular screenings.

What is Human Papillomavirus (HPV)?

Human papillomavirus (HPV) causes more than 99% of cervical cancers. Two high-risk HPV types, HPV 16 and HPV 18, are responsible for about 70% of cervical cancers worldwide. Luckily, most women infected by HPV do not develop cervical cancer. About 90% of HPV infections resolve on their own within two years. It is still important to be screened regularly because precancerous cell changes and early stages of cervical cancer often do not show symptoms.

The Importance of Regular Screenings

Most of the time, cervical cancer can be prevented through early detection and treatment. Women should start receiving a pap test starting at age 21 and an HPV screening by age 30. A pap test can find abnormal or precancerous changes in the cells of the cervix. Additional procedures and testing can be performed if HPV is found or recurring.

At CHDC, patients receive compassionate care at every age and stage of life. CHDC OB/GYN Provider Krista Dankiw-Ludwig, MSN, CRNP, WHNP-BC, discusses the importance of regular health screenings, such as pap smears and HPV tests, to detect and prevent cervical cancer early. What Are The Risks For Cervical Cancer?

  • Having HPV: HPV causes nearly all cases of cervical cancer.
  • Not getting screened: Cervical cancer is most often found in women who have never been screened.
  • Smoking: Women who smoke are about two times more likely to get cervical cancer than non-smokers.
  • Age: Women over the age of 30 are more likely to get cervical cancer.

How The HPV Vaccine Can Protect You

Not only should you be screened regularly to prevent cervical cancer, but you can also receive the HPV vaccine (Gardasil 9). CHDC now provides the Gardisil vaccine in women up until age 45 (previously age 26). The HPV vaccination prevents infection from several types of HPV that can cause cervical cancers and genital warts. It is recommended for both females and males even if they are not yet sexually active. If you received the vaccine, you should still come in regularly for screenings.
