What Are the Best Foot Care Tips for Summer?

The summer season is a great time for sandals, beach days, and outdoor adventures, but the heat can be tough on your feet. Hot sand at the beach, humid lake trips, and crowded water parks can lead to common foot problems like blisters, sunburn, athletes foot, and more. By following simple foot care tips, you can protect your foot health, stay comfortable all summer long, and avoid unnecessary trips to the doctor’s office.

Tip #1: Apply Sunscreen to Your Feet

Just like your face, arms, and legs, your feet are also at risk of sunburn. The next time you’re relaxing in the sun and applying sunscreen, don’t forget your feet. Be sure to apply a broad-spectrum SPF to the tops of your feet, your ankles, and any exposed skin. This is especially important if you wear sandals or walk outdoors for long periods of time.

Tip #2: Choose Breathable, Supportive Footwear

Look for footwear made with breathable fabrics, such as mesh, to help keep your feet cool and dry. If you enjoy wearing sandals, consider packing an extra pair of sneakers, as sandals often provide little to no arch support and can lead to heel pain. For activities where your shoes may get wet, water shoes are a great option. If you don’t have water shoes, be sure your sneakers are completely dry before wearing them again to help prevent foot and fungal infections.

Tip #3: Avoid Walking Barefoot in Public Spaces

Make sure your feet are protected, especially in crowded areas like beaches, water parks, public pools, and locker rooms. Walking barefoot in public places increases your risk of developing plantar warts, athlete’s foot, ringworm, and other infections. You also risk getting injured when your feet are exposed, as toes can easily be stepped on or hurt by sharp objects or other people walking around.

Tip #4: Keep Feet Clean and Dry

Wash your feet daily with soap and water, making sure they are completely dry before putting on a fresh pair of socks. A warm and moist environment is the perfect place for fungus and infections to grow. Never re-wear your socks even if they look clean. Socks absorb sweat and bacteria throughout the day and re-wearing them can increase your risk of athlete’s foot, fungal infections, and bad odors.
